In many organizations, agreements are made regarding a personal training budget for employees. However, 40% of the training budget goes unused! What a waste! A missed opportunity for both the employee and the employer.

What do you want to achieve this year? And what do you need for that? In this blog, 6 tips: discover what is important to you and which talents you want to develop.

1. Ensure you remain sustainably employable

We operate in a rapidly changing market due to technological advancements, internationalization, and an increase in retirement age. For this reason, it is crucial to continue developing yourself. Those who fail to align themselves with market demands run the risk of falling behind.

Assurances are no longer relevant, so take advantage of the opportunity to take a course, training, or education, both for your career within the organization and for your future career outside. In other words, take control of your own career!

2. Developing yourself leads to more enjoyment in your work

A no-brainer, right? Naturally, you gain more energy and increase your motivation when you acquire new and interesting information. The danger lies in the busy schedules and the day-to-day rush, leaving no room for education.

However, participating in a new and interesting workshop, course, or training may offer you new ideas and there's a significant chance that it will make your work even more enjoyable!

3. Think beyond your current role

By learning and developing yourself, you become more aware of your talents and possibilities. Therefore, think beyond your current role and tasks. What else suits you?

Organizations are increasingly moving towards thinking and acting in roles rather than fixed job descriptions. Why? It brings flexibility, contributes to strategic personnel management, and employees can better utilize their talents. It also means you become more flexible and adaptable to changes!

4. Consider an assessment

If you want to take control of your career and determine where your talents lie, participating in an assessment can be enlightening.

Through an assessment, you gain even more insight into your talents and weaknesses, your motivations, and competencies related to certain roles. Determine what you want to develop in first. That's your initial step!

5. Distinguish yourself with your knowledge

By participating in training, you also help your colleagues and team to become more skilled in their field. This helps the organization progress as well. The likelihood of this resulting in benefits for yourself, your team, or the organization is significantly high.

6. Try something different

It could also be the case that redundancy is looming. What then? Will you continue to develop within your current role, like an administrative position, for example? A role that is already being digitized in many organizations. Or will you discuss with your employer about taking an entirely different direction?

You might think your employer wouldn't agree, but there are plenty of examples where the employer was willing to collaborate with the employee. Take the example of a man who followed his passion for coffee and took a barista course, eventually turning it into his career. What was his original position? Inside Sales Representative. It goes to show, "no risk, no reward!"

Whatever you decide, whatever steps you take; take control of your own career!
